A 12-week small-group writing cohort that walks you stage-by-stage from where you are to a defended dissertation. Eight to ten students per cohort, weekly live sessions, peer accountability pods, and direct feedback from Dr. Adriann Wolfe at every stage of the arc.
The cohort model
The cohort retreats aren't a series of disconnected workshops — they're a single 12-week arc that mirrors the actual stages every dissertation moves through. You enter the cohort wherever you are in the arc, and you exit with a defended dissertation or a manuscript that's ready to defend. The structure does the holding so the writing can actually happen.
Each cohort is capped at 8–10 students so that feedback is real and the room stays small enough that no one disappears. Dr. Wolfe runs every live session, reviews every milestone draft, and sits in on each defense-prep rehearsal before graduation. The cohort moves as one unit but each student keeps their own dissertation, their own committee, and their own timeline.
Stage-by-stage arc
We start at the literature review — the part that derails more dissertations than any other. The cohort works through synthesis (not summary), identifies the gap your dissertation will actually fill, and produces a defensible chapter outline by week three. No one moves to stage two without a lit review their committee has signed off on.
Stage two locks the methodology before data collection begins. Each cohort member presents their design to the group for a hostile-but-supportive review. By the end of week six, your methodology chapter is IRB-ready and your methods defense — the one most students fail first — has already happened in miniature.
The middle of the arc is where most dissertations die. We don't let it. Weeks seven through nine are structured writing blocks: protected async time, weekly draft submissions to your accountability pod, and direct line-by-line feedback from Dr. Wolfe on each results chapter. By week nine, both data chapters are drafted and ready for your committee.
The final stage is the defense itself. Each cohort member presents a 20-minute defense talk to the group, fields live questions from Dr. Wolfe playing the role of a hostile committee member, and revises based on the rehearsal. By the end of week twelve, your defense is scheduled, your slides are tight, and your committee has been briefed on what you're walking in with.
What's included per cohort
90-minute group calls each week, led by Dr. Wolfe, focused on the active stage of the arc.
Protected writing hours with the cohort — camera-on, pomodoro-style, three times a week.
Three-person pods that meet weekly to share drafts and keep each other moving between sessions.
Line-by-line feedback on every milestone chapter — lit review, methodology, both data chapters.
A live defense rehearsal with hostile-question drills in week 11, before your real defense.
All recorded sessions, templates, and cohort materials stay with you past graduation.
Common questions
The 3-day intensives are a single compressed sprint — great for breaking through a specific chapter or starting momentum on a stalled draft. The cohort retreats are a 12-week structured arc that walks you through all four stages of a dissertation with sustained accountability and feedback. Most students use the 3-day intensive to make progress inside a cohort, or to test the waters before joining one. The cohort is the longer-term container.
Life happens. Each cohort has a one-week grace window built in, and all live sessions are recorded so you can catch up on your own time. If you need to miss more than a week — illness, family, a defense schedule that shifted — we work with you on a plan to either pause and rejoin the next cohort or extend your current one. Nobody gets dropped because they had a bad month.
Plan on roughly 6–8 hours per week: the 90-minute live session, two 60-minute async writing blocks, one pod meeting, and time to revise the chapter you're working on that week. That's the floor — students who put in more finish faster, students who put in less still finish but take the full 12 weeks. The structure is built to be sustainable, not heroic.
Yes — we run rolling cohorts, so if your committee has already pushed you past lit review or methodology, you can join at the matching stage of the next cohort and complete the remaining stages. About a third of each cohort joins mid-arc. The structure adapts; the goal (defended dissertation) doesn't.
